Early start, driving from Innisfail to Etty Bay and we got our long longed for close encounter with Cassowaries... Yes, plural! Very exciting, and our minds soared. When the big birds had disappeared back into the forest we continued to the beach, but no fun birds there. So, we made a quick visit to Coquette Point, hoping for another glimpse of the male with the three chicks. A little greedy, I agree, and we didn't see them. So we returned to Innisfail and checked out.
We had a dental appointment in Cairns to attend to, and planned to make the most of the unplanned return to that city. That means shorebird-watching along the Esplanade plus a nice lunch at Muddy's Café before the 3 PM appointment. The dental part of it all went well and didn't cost me a fortune, so all is well that ends well.
Afterwards we strolled all the way from the dentist, along the Esplanade, up to the northernmost parking lot. It's free so that's where we park. We called the Chambers Wildlife Rainforest Lodgings to inform of our late arrival and they informed us that a envelope with key and info would wait for us outside the reception door.
The drive up to the Atherton Tablelands were done at dusk and then after sundown and it was very tiring. But, we arrived without any incidents. We found the promised envelope and then our room. After lugging our bags and checking the room we took a walk to the lighted observation hide (the main reason for us staying there 2 nights). Krefft's Glider, Long-nosed Bandicoot and Striped Possum came to feast on the sugared tree trunk and that was a visual feast for us. New marsupials!
