In this video, we explore how we visualise microorganisms, from their size and shape to the powerful microscopy techniques used to observe them. We’ll start by examining the incredible diversity in microbial size, from tiny bacteria to larger eukaryotic cells, as well as their distinct shapes (such as cocci, bacilli, and spirilla). Then, we’ll discuss the different microscopy techniques that allow us to see these microscopic life forms. You'll learn about bright-field microscopy, the most common method, as well as dark-field and phase-contrast microscopy, which enhance contrast without staining. We’ll also briefly introduce fluorescence microscopy, which uses fluorescent dyes to highlight specific structures, and explore the incredible detail provided by transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM).
