Mixed Methods in Health Sciences: Applications and Challenges - Leslie Curry (March, 2016)

Mixed methods are increasingly being used across a diverse range of health science discplines and contexts. The session will open with a brief overview of how mixed methods are currently being applied in the health sciences (e.g., clinical and health services research, implementation science), and will draw upon several illustrative examples. The session will then turn to challenges in designing, implementing and publishing mixed methods studies in health sciences contexts. Opportunities for open discussion will be provided.

Leslie Curry, PhD, MPH, is Senior Research Scientist at the Yale School of Public Health, Lecturer in Yale College, and core faculty at the Yale Global Health Leadership Institute. Leslie’s research focuses on health care access, quality and outcomes in hospital, community and institutional settings in the U.S. and internationally. She is especially interested in the development and scale up of innovative, evidence-based health practices, programs and policies and regularly collaborates with government agencies and health care providers in these efforts. Leslie is a recognized expert in qualitative and mixed methods. She was a member of an advisory committee appointed by the Office of Behavioral and Social Sciences Research at the National Institutes of Health charged with defining best practices in mixed methods research. Leslie has authored two textbooks related to methods: Curry L and Nunez-Smith M. 2014. Mixed Methods in Health Sciences Research, Sage Publications and Curry L, Shield R, Wetle T. (Eds.) 2006. Improving Research in Public Health and Aging: Qualitative and Mixed Methods, American Public Health Association. A Fellow of Branford College at Yale, Leslie teaches extensively and provides mentoring at the undergraduate, graduate and post-graduate levels in public health and medicine.
