Washington Wizards, D.C.'s professional team in the NBA Eastern Conference. The franchise was founded back in 1961, starting its journey as the Chicago Packers. After several relocations and name changes, the team was famously known for years as the Washington Bullets. The current name, the Wizards, was adopted in 1997 to distance the organization from the violent connotation of the word 'Bullets.'
The Wizards' greatest historical achievement is their sole 1978 NBA Championship. That legendary title was secured by defeating the Seattle SuperSonics in a dramatic seven-game series. The greatest player in franchise history is widely considered to be Hall of Famer Wes Unseld. Unseld, along with fellow legend Elvin Hayes, led the team during their dominant run in the 1970s.
More recently, the dynamic backcourt duo of John Wall and Bradley Beal brought years of exciting basketball and playoff runs. The Wizards continue to represent the nation's capital, playing their home games at the Capital One Arena.
