The Toyota "ZR" series is generally regarded as one of the more reliable engines Toyota has produced in the past. It is featured in almost EVERY car Toyota made at one point that is smaller than their mid-size sedans. This engine was used in the Toyota Corolla, Matrix, Yaris, Lotus Elise, Scion XD, Corolla Cross, CHR, Prius, Suzuki Landy, Lexus CT, and likely even more cars I did not mention here.
This engine series is typically either 1.8l or 2.0l, that makes in the range of 98hp-138hp, depending on the application. The engine shown in this video is from a 2013 Toyota Prius, with the typical cylinder head gasket failure, and oil consumption...
The cars that feature this engine(outside of the early 3rd gen Prius) are generally very reliable. Since this engine is a hybrid, it featured an EGR valve that typically clogs, and causes an engine failure as a result. This engine also visibly consumed copious amounts of engine oil. The intake runner tract was COMPLETELY covered in carbon/oil deposits.
If you happen to have a 2ZR-FE, 2ZR-FXE, or any other variant, the basic engine design remains to be the same as this. Since this is a 2ZR-FXE, it features, the Atkinson cycle combustion process, which is known to help with efficiency.
Applications, where the ZR engine series is used outside of hybrid vehicles, don't typically have the same head gasket issues as are shown in this video. OIL CONSUMPTION IS COMMON ON EARLY APPLICATIONS...
This video might come to a surprise to some, but if you were not aware, this is actually a common issue in early 3rd gen Prius motors. It is common enough that there is documentation provided BY Toyota, in regards to Oil consumption, AND blowing head gaskets.
If you happen to have any additional knowledge in regards to this engine, I would LOVE to hear it in the comments below! Do you have an early 3rd generation Prius? Did this happen to you as well?
If you can confirm if the engine has forged rods, Let me know!
Thanks for watching!
