Cab Ride Göschenen-Andermatt-Realp / Regional Train (Matterhorn Gotthard Bahn, Switzerland) 4K

Schöllenenbahn is a short 4-kilometer line with magnificent history and importance. Built on the Schöllenen gorge (also called La Scalina in the local Rhaetian language), through which the Gotthard Pass route over the Alps traversed since the year 1200, with rich history and local legends (of the Devil’s Bridge). Schöllenen gorge, where River Reuss falls down 400 meters over a short distance, was one of the most dangerous parts of the route that went from Göschenen to Andermatt and then from Hospental up the mountain over Gotthard Pass and many steps through history were made to enable safer trip over Gotthard.

With the construction and opening of the original Gotthard Rail tunnel in 1882 (the longest railway tunnel at the time at 15km length), Andermatt Valley ended isolated and ideas for building this short connector were created immediately in 1890 but meter-gauge rack railway line was completed only in 1917, hurried by the strategic reasons to enable providing the Alpine defense fortifications during World War I, though reliable all-year operation was achieved only by 1925, together with the opening of Furka-Oberalp railway. Original operating company Schöllenenbahn AG was taken over by Furka-Oberalp Railway (FO) in 1960, finally being merged with Brig-Visp-Zermatt (BVZ) in 2003 to form Matterhorn-Gotthard Railway (MGB).

The line is built with abt rack system, with 2509 meters (of total 3770m length) equipped with rack with a maximum gradient of 18% to climb 330 meter height difference between Göschenen and Andermatt through 1022 meters of tunnels and 1110 meters of galleries, crossing several tunnels, including 55-meter Teufel (Devil’s) Bridge.

So enjoy this unusual, unique but very important line, the video includes a trip uphill, from Göschenen to Andermatt, a return trip downhill and then again a view from an uphill trip from inside the cab, continuing past Andermatt on Furka-Oberalp line to Realp.
