The high rate of hunger and poverty is driving a spike in shoplifting in South Africa. According to the National Institute for Crime Prevention and Reintegration of Offenders (Nicro) over 6-thousand shoplifters were arrested across South Africa between 2021 and 27 June 2023. Shoplifting is a real economical concern and occurs under various circumstances, there are professional shoplifters, shoplifting driven by poverty, addiction, kleptomaniacs, and thrill-seekers. Vincent Cruywagen, a Daily Maverick journalist has profiled a single mother with three children from Bishop Lavis in Cape Town about her daily struggle with hunger and poverty. She has resorted to stealing food for her kids in order to survive. Is the terrible economic situation in South Africa, now driving people to shoplifting in order to to put food on the table?
