Chasok Tangnam is the biggest, most significant harvest festival of the Limbu people (Yakthung) in Eastern Nepal, celebrated on the full moon of the Mangsir month (Nov-Dec) to thank Tagera Niwaphuma (Mother Nature) and ancestors for the year's bounty, involving offering first grains, traditional Chyabrung dances, Palam songs, feasting, and cultural rituals to mark the transition from farming to new beginnings. It signifies gratitude, community unity, and the revival of Limbu agricultural wisdom, featuring rituals led by priests (Mundhum) and vibrant cultural expressions.
"Chasok" means new harvest grains, and "Tangnam" means festival/celebration, making it a festival of offering the first-harvested food.
Falls on the full moon of Mangsir (Nepali month), around late November/early December.
To offer the first grains, fruits, and food to deities (God Yuma Sammang) and ancestors.
To express deep gratitude to Mother Nature for sustenance.
To pass down agricultural knowledge (from ancient yam-eating to farming) and cultural values.
Rituals & Practices:
First-harvested items are offered as a sacred gesture.
* Mundhum Rituals:* Priests (Phedangma, Samba) conduct ceremonies based on the sacred text Mundhum.
Traditional dances like the vigorous Chyabrung (Paddy Dance) and soulful Palam songs are performed.
Sharing food and celebrating together strengthens community bonds.
Exchanging cordial greetings and blessings.
It's a cornerstone of Limbu identity, preserving their spiritual beliefs (nature worship), history, music, dance, and way of life, marking the end of the agricultural cycle and the start of new social activities.
