Can you grow basil indoors in a pot or container? Does basil grow back after cutting? How long does it take to grow a basil plant? How big does basil grow?
These are some of the questions we get so we decided to do a video with helpful tips and show you!

Basil is an easy herb to grow indoors and it does not require much attention or care. It grows quickly, can be harvested after 30-40 days, and it also regrows fast when cutting or trimming it. In this video, we grow Thai basil, Classico, and Dark opal, but the process is the same for any variety.

To grow basil any type of container or pot will do. The larger it is, the more space the roots have to grow, and the larger the plant will become. We used a 0.5l / 16 oz plastic container. Whatever container you use, a food container, Tupperware, juice box, or pot, make sure there are holes in the bottom to aerate the roots and to drain excess water.

We use coco coir (coco block) instead of potting soil as we've had issues with soils in the past; they have contained eggs and bugs. Both soil and coco coir will work, but we prefer the latter.

For light, a 5.7W LED bulb was used. To begin with, the lamp was placed 50 cm / 20" from the plants. At this distance the plant received around 150 PPFD (µmol/m2/s). As the plants matured, the lamp was moved closer to around 40 cm / 15" giving around 300 PPFD.
A small LED lamp is fine for one or two small plants, like in this video, but for a larger grow area we recommend a purpose-built LED grow light, see www.ledtonic.com for inspiration.

As you can see in the video, after 30-35 days the plants had a few sets of leaves and could be harvested sparsely. After 40-45 days all plants had several sets of leaves that could be harvested. After 48 days we took cuttings from alls plants which were placed in plain water for about 2-3 weeks. At this point, the cuttings had regrown roots and could be planted in new pots.
