In the 1950s, the Shanghai Experimental Opera House created and performed the ethnic dance drama "Dagger Society." The "Dagger Society" suite was composed by Shang Yi as the accompanying music for this dance drama. The structure of the dance drama incorporates elements from traditional Chinese episodic novels. The choreography is primarily based on Chinese classical dance, supplemented by folk dances with geographical characteristics of the Jiangnan region, creating scenes, enhancing characters, and adding vibrant colors. The music of "Dagger Society" establishes a style of "theme development combined with tune linkage." The musical material is derived mainly from Chinese opera and Jiangnan folk music. Whether it's dramatic or coloristic music, the musical images of the main characters, in particular, are significant in vividness.
