Kaoru, a high school boy who can’t swim, becomes spellbound by Sonoko, a star of the school swim team. Even though she shows no interest in him, Kaoru joins the team purely to be near her—and to impress her. With the help of a quirky old woman coach and even Sonoko’s mother, he starts training. Despite his fear of water and physical limitations, he dreams of Olympic success to win her over. However, after seeing Sonoko with the school’s top swimmer, Kaoru confronts emotional heartbreak—and the realization that love might demand sacrifice rather than achievement.
This is the film adaptation of the manga of the same name based on Minetaro Mochizuki's original work, and the debut work of screenwriter and director Jyōji Matsuoka.
