Obstacle Detection level crossing in Polegate, East Sussex. There have been several incidents of pedestrians becoming trapped on the crossing by lowering barriers. The obstacle detection system is designed to stop the barriers from lowering automatically if a pedestrian is still obstructing the crossing. 'Emergency Exit' signs have been installed on the left-side barriers as an indication of where to leave the crossing area, if the left-side lowering barriers block the path.
