Au nord de Châteauroux, à Déols, s’élève un clocher comme seul vestige des temps anciens. Sa fondation remonte à 917 après notre ère. Un homme de l’entourage du duc d’Aquitaine, Ebbes de Bourges, dit le Noble, grand du Berry, fonde une maison féodale et, sur le même modèle de celle de Cluny, une abbaye « l’abbaye Notre-Dame-St-Pierre-St-Paul ».

Cette dernière compte parmi les plus importantes de son temps, à la fois par son architecture et par son influence. Ses sept clochers et ses dimensions remarquables (113 mètres de long pour l’église abbatiale) attirent les vocations de près de 200 moines ! Malgré la puissance de l’abbaye, une succession d’événements tels que la guerre de Cent ans et les guerres de religion la mène à sa ruine. Sa destruction est accentuée au XVIIe siècle lorsque le seigneur d’alors la transforme en carrière de pierres.


Ne subsiste aujourd’hui de la grandeur de cette abbaye qu’un des clochers, haut de 42 mètres, accessible l’été, duquel la vue est imprenable. On peut également admirer quelques vestiges de l’église et du cloître ainsi qu’un ensemble remarquable de chapiteaux romans dans l’espace muséal René Pécherat. L’abbaye de Déols est inscrite parmi les sites clunisiens d’Europe.


North of Châteauroux, in Déols, stands a bell tower as the only vestige of ancient times. Its foundation dates back to 917 AD. A man of the entourage of the Duke of Aquitaine, Ebbes de Bourges, known as the Noble, great of Berry, founded a feudal house and, on the same model of that of Cluny, an abbey "the Abbey of Notre-Dame-St -Pierre-St-Paul ”.

Its destruction is accentuated in the XVII th century when the lord of the then turns into stone quarry.

Only one of the 42-meter-high bell towers, accessible in summer, from which the view is breathtaking, remains of the grandeur of this abbey. You can also admire some vestiges of the church and the cloister as well as a remarkable set of Romanesque capitals in the René Pécherat museum space. The Abbey of Déols is listed among the Cluniac sites in Europe.
