George McDonald was raised in Atlanta, Georgia. At the age of 21, after graduating from college, McDonald joined the Army Air Corps and was trained as a B-17 pilot. In Lincoln, Nebraska he was assigned to crew #10, 568th squadron, 390th Bomb Group. They then were shipped to Tennessee to conduct phase training. After completing their training, the crew boarded a ship to England. McDonald flew 15 combat missions by the time the war in Europe ended. McDonald provides an excellent description of the "Chowhound" missions, which were food drops to feed the starving Dutch people at the end of the war.
