Samuil Feinberg (1890 - 1962) - Piano Concerto No. 3, Op. 44 (1947, rev. 1951)
I. Grave - Allegro Maestoso [0:00]
II. Andante molto tenuto e cantabile [18:51]
III. Un poco agitato [31:55]
Grand Symphony of Radio & TV Orchestra, Gennady Tcherkassov
Victor Bunin, piano (2007)
Feinberg's third and final piano concerto is a three-movement work in C minor. At around 45 minutes in length, it is his longest piano concerto.
Like his Piano Concerto No. 2, Feinberg's third piano concerto is written in a more accessible style than his earlier works. The beautiful theme introduced at [0:40] reminds of Rachmaninoff, while other sections are similar in style to Prokofiev and Myaskovsky. Despite Feinberg's shift away from his earlier Scriabin-esque explorations, the work is not dry or unoriginal. It is quite inventive and may be Feinberg's finest work of his later period.
I apologize for the warped appearance of the score. This was the only copy I could obtain. It appears that Bunin may be playing a different version of the third movement here, since there are a number of deviations from the score. The line at [33:17], while only written once in the score, is played twice in the recording. At [36:27], Bunin deviates from the score, playing something that resembles the passage at [37:12]. I was able to alter the score slightly to more accurately match what he plays. Around [40:49], the piano plays what is written as the orchestral part, while [40:54] and [41:00] are completely different from the score, only returning to the score at [41:08]. Finally, at [43:31], Bunin skips an octave section leading into the finale. I was able to fix this portion of the score as well.
