In this video essay you'll learn how the movie fails in terms of debate, ideas and language. In a nutshell, it's because characters don't use arguments against each other's ideas, majorly because they don't express their own ideas, majorly because they don't use words that are strong enough to express their ideas at all. Failure in every stage.
In opposition to the movie's skin-deep approach to its themes, you'll see how other better movies succeed where "Conclave" failed – that is, by succeeding in the use of language, ideas and debate. Robert Bolt's "A Man for All Seasons" (1966), Jean Anouilh's "Becket" (1964, adapted by Edward Anhalt) and Richard Brooks' "Elmer Gantry (1960, adapted from Sinclair Lewis) are all Best Adapted Screenplay Oscar winners that show how it's done. You'll also see exemplary clips from Tony Kushner's "Angels in America" (2003), John Osbourne's "Luther" (1974), Éric Rohmer's "My Night at Maud's" (1969) and Ingmar Bergman's "The Seventh Seal" (1957), among many others.
