Australia Part 27: Painted Snipe at Hasties Swamp & Porch-birding at Crater Lakes RFC Oct 5

Our day started early, we were supposed to get to Hasties Swamp asap, but we got sidetracked by a worm-begging Whipbird outside our door...
So, we had a bird-feeding Bonanza at the porch and didn't arrive to Hasties Swamp until ten AM. Too late for out-and-about foraging Painted Snipe, but it was early enough for it to still be awake and sitting halfway out of its hiding spot. Sunning and preening. I had mounted the 800 mill plus the 1,4 tc and took video in crop mode. Way WAY too much for freehand, especially for me, but when you lack a tripod you do have to make do with what you have (i e unsteady hands, even when sitting down). Needs must when the devil drive, as the saying goes.
We were quite happy with our Painted Snipe observation and moved to the hide where we saw our very first Eastern Yellow Robin. It was too close, despite the fact that I had removed the teleconverter... Then a hectic band of Brown Gerygones popped up around the minimum focus range and made the problem even worse ;-)
Other birds on the water were two fishing Pelicans, a ditto Darter (caught a tiny Rainbowfish), some Grey Teals and a Plumed Egret. Plenty of Magpie Geese were around, ofc. In the trees lining the road we saw Yellow-faced Honeyeater and the Lifer White-cheeked Honeyeater.
We had a late lunch, then returned to Crater Lakes Rainforest Cottages and resumed our porch-birding. Birds seen: Eastern Whipbird, Victoria's Riflebird, Spotted Catbird, Little Shrikethrush (aka Rufous Shrikethrush) and Brushturkey.
