Bach's Clavier-Übung III (1739) provides a staggering and complex array of preludes based on Lutheran hymns following the order of the Lutheran Mass. BWV 675 is one of three settings of the chorale 'Allein Gott in der Höh sei Ehr (The Lutheran 'Gloria in excelsis') in which Bach veils the chorale in the alto voice betwixt varied and intricate outer voices.
