Neither thoughts nor the associated anxiety or discomfort keep OCD alive. What keeps OCD alive is your safety behavior. Whether you're taking reassurance, avoiding it, or engaging in any compulsion, your safety behavior keeps OCD alive . It's what reinforces it. If you truly want to recover, you must first stop engaging in safety behaviors. If you're avoiding it, you'll need to gradually stop avoiding it and expose yourself to it. While taking reassurance, you 'll receive requests, but even then, you should avoid taking reassurance again, using the assurance you already have . Stop taking any action you were taking during the illusion of safety. This will be torturing to the body. It will feel as if you're losing control. But if you learn to bear that anxiety and witness its natural rise and fall, then within a few days, you 'll start doing the same things you do today with discomfort, with comfort. And as soon as your compulsions disappear, your reconditioning will begin. You won't be reactive to your triggers. You won't feel that anxiety or discomfort. Thoughts will still be present. But neither anxiety nor irrational fear will torture you. Nor will you be taking any action. So, gradually, your brain will get the message that these thoughts must end. You can't stop them. You can't eliminate them. Because you can't predict which thoughts will come to your mind in the next 2-5 minutes. How many thoughts will come. You can't tell. Thoughts don't belong to you. Thoughts are forming within you on their own. If they form on their own, they will end on their own. You need to stop your hand actions and put your body in a relaxed state. Engage your nervous system. Make your body feel grounded. Expose it, and see how quickly you'll be free of OCD.
