Iran News LIVE: Iran Reopens Its Airspace | Khamenei | Trump | US Vs Iran | Iran Protests | N18G
Iran reopened its airspace after a near-five-hour closure amid concerns about possible military action between the U.S. and Iran that forced airlines to cancel, reroute or delay some flights.
Iran closed its airspace to all flights except international ones to and from Iran with official permission at 5:15 p.m. ET (2215 GMT) on Wednesday, according to a notice on the U.S. Federal Aviation Administration website.
As the world sits on edge over possible US military action against Iran, President Donald Trump on Wednesday said he had been told “on good authority" that Tehran has stopped its plans for fast trials and executions as widespread protests have left over 3,400 dead.
“We’ve been told that the killing in Iran is stopping — it’s stopped — it’s stopping," Trump said. “And there’s no plan for executions, or an execution, or executions — so I’ve been told that on good authority."
The death toll from nationwide protests in Iran spiked Tuesday to at least 2,000 people killed, activists said, as Iranians made phone calls abroad for the first time in days after authorities severed communications during a crackdown on demonstrators.
The U.S.-based Human Rights Activists News Agency, which has been accurate in previous unrest in recent years, gave the latest toll. It relies on supporters in Iran cross-checking information.
Eyewitnesses have reported violence on the streets of Iran as the country enters its third week of anti-government protests which have spread across all of its 31 provinces. Two people reported security forces armed with rifles killing “many people” while another saw “bodies piled up on each other” in a hospital.
In a warning to the US, Iran’s parliamentary speaker said American military and commercial bases will be treated as targets for retaliation if Washington intervenes militarily. President Donald Trump yesterday said the US was ready to help the Iranian people.
Iran’s Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi said on Friday (January 9) the government was engaging with different social groups to address problems as protests sparked by growing economic hardships persist, while accusing the United States and Israel of interfering in unrest and seeking to turn peaceful protests into violence.
"The government is trying to engage with different classes and various sectors to resolve the problems. Both the United States and Israel have officially stated that they have interference and a role in these riots, and they are trying to turn these demonstrations and protests, which are peaceful, into violence and riots," Araqchi said at a press conference in Lebanon.
Iran was largely cut off from the outside world on Friday after authorities blacked out the internet to curb growing unrest, as video showed buildings and vehicles ablaze in anti-government protests raging through the streets of several cities.
In a televised address, Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei vowed not to back down, accusing demonstrators of acting on behalf of émigré opposition groups and the United States, as rights groups reported police firing on protesters in the south.
