Why So Few Scots Live in Northern Scotland Compared to the South
The Scottish Highlands are famous worldwide — Braveheart, whisky, tartan, ancient castles. But here's what nobody tells you: almost no one actually lives there.
80% of all Scots live in the Lowlands. The Highlands have fewer people per square kilometer than Russia. How did Scotland's most iconic region become so empty?
The answer lies in two forces: geology and tragedy.
430 million years ago, the Highland Boundary Fault drew a line across Scotland — fertile farmland to the south, barren mountains to the north. Geography made the Highlands hard to inhabit.
But then came the Highland Clearances. Between 1750 and 1860, landlords systematically evicted 70,000 Highlanders to make room for sheep. Homes were burned. Families who lived there for 500 years were thrown out. The population collapsed from 30% to just 8%.
This is the story of how Scotland's most beautiful region became its emptiest — and why those empty glens remain haunted to this day.
