A quiet winter walk around the Transcona Community Bioreserve in Winnipeg, Manitoba.
Transcona began as a railway town in the early 1900s, built around repair shops established by the Grand Trunk Pacific Railway east of Winnipeg. It later became its own city before joining Winnipeg in 1972.
The land that is now the Bioreserve was once home to a Domtar wood preserving plant. Decades of industrial use left the soil contaminated, requiring extensive environmental remediation. The goal was to restore the site while creating a space the community could once again enjoy.
Today, the Bioreserve is a naturalized park with prairie grasses, trees, wildlife, and a looping trail that reflects both the area’s industrial past and its renewal. It stands as a quiet example of how damaged land can be restored through long term care and stewardship.
This video follows a full lap of the Bioreserve in winter, with no narration, intended for slow viewing, background ambience, or a moment of calm.
