Churchill described the sinking of HMS Prince of Wales and HMS Repulse as the greatest shock that he had received during the war. It left both the Indian and Pacific oceans almost devoid of Allied Naval power. What were the mistakes that had been made during the Second World War? What role did Churchill himself play in the loss of Force Z?
We look at Concentration and how this Principle of War was managed both by the Japanese and by the Allies.
What were the considerations behind the deployment of Force Z (and where was HMS Illustrious?)
This is an excellent example of the risks of ignoring Concentration and yet the Japanese did the exact same thing. Too few forces for the task at hand - they were well and truly outnumbered, especially considering the scale of the offensive they had to conduct. And yet LTGEN Yamashita's risk was mitigated. What were the tactical mitigations for this operational risk?
Excellent joint professional military education for large-scale combat operations.
