A Muslim and a Māori photographer share their culture through their cameras

Te Rawhitiroa Bosch (Ngāpuhi, Ngāti Kahu) is a well-known photographer in te ao Māori and abroad because of the real and unscripted moments that he captures in Māori life. His work showcases the beauty of tikanga and Māoritanga in action.

Dr Rami Elsayed moved to Ōtautahi Christchurch in 2017 to complete his PhD in chemistry. Moving to Aotearoa New Zealand with his young family and no relatives while adjusting to a new culture was a challenge. Photography helped him in this transition and opened doors to connect with new people.

Te Rawhitiroa invites Rami to his hometown of Whāingaroa Raglan. They connect over their shared love for photography and their curiosity about each other's culture and practices.

Ahi Wānanga (the fires of discussion) is a six-part web series exploring what identity, belonging and resilience is to 12 young people from Aotearoa’s Muslim and Māori communities.
