From Diagnosis to Remission: Jessica Wharton’s Breast Cancer Journey | Taxol, Double Mastectomy & PTSD
In this powerful and deeply personal video, Jessica Wharton shares her emotional and physical battle with breast cancer, a journey that began in 2011 when she first discovered three suspicious lumps in her left breast. Despite her initial instincts that something was wrong, her concerns were dismissed by the first doctors she saw, who found no indication of cancer. For nine long months, Jessica lived with uncertainty—until she decided to seek a second opinion, a decision that would ultimately save her life.
Her new care team, led by a plastic surgeon, ordered a biopsy and imaging that revealed the devastating diagnosis: Stage 3A Invasive Ductal Carcinoma. Although her right breast was healthy, her doctors strongly recommended a double mastectomy to reduce the risk of recurrence. Within a week, Jessica underwent the life-changing surgery.
But the fight was far from over. Jessica’s treatment journey continued with an aggressive chemotherapy regimen beginning with the infamous "Red Devil" – a potent mix known for its harsh side effects, including hair loss and extreme fatigue. She was then prescribed Taxol, a common chemotherapy drug, but suffered a severe allergic reaction after only two treatments, forcing her doctors to discontinue it.
The next stage of treatment was super radiation—30 grueling sessions over six weeks, administered five days a week. The radiation proved even more exhausting following her reaction to Taxol, and the cycle of brief recovery followed by intense therapy took a major toll on Jessica both physically and emotionally.
In 2013, her perseverance paid off—Jessica received the incredible news that she was officially in remission. She describes the moment as “like winning the lottery.” Since then, she has remained cancer-free, a beacon of hope and resilience to others navigating their own cancer journeys.
Despite being in remission, Jessica continues to deal with the emotional aftermath of her ordeal. She lives with PTSD, a silent but significant consequence of her experience, and is unable to return to the workforce full time. But even through these challenges, Jessica maintains a spirit of gratitude and strength, determined to share her story to help others understand the full impact of chemotherapy, radiation, and survivorship.
This video sheds light on the lesser-discussed long-term effects of cancer treatment and the importance of advocating for yourself in the medical system. Jessica’s honesty, bravery, and resilience will inspire anyone touched by breast cancer, either personally or through a loved one.
