A brief overview of anti-evolution creationism from Darwin's time to present:

Post-Darwin Backlash (late 1800s–early 1900s): After On the Origin of Species (1859), many religious groups rejected Darwin's ideas. Some accepted "old Earth" creationism, while others clung to a literal Genesis account. The rise of fundamentalism in the U.S. reinforced biblical inerrancy.

Young Earth Creationism (1920s–1960s): Popularized by The Genesis Flood (1961) by Whitcomb and Morris, which argued for a 6,000-year-old Earth and a global flood. This view dominated U.S. conservative evangelical circles.

Intelligent Design (1980s–2000s): Emerged as a legally strategic rebranding of creationism. Promoted by the Discovery Institute, it avoided explicit religious claims, focusing instead on “irreducible complexity.” Struck down in court (e.g., Kitzmiller v. Dover, 2005) as religiously motivated.

The Templeton Foundation (1987–present): Though not anti-evolution in a classic sense, the Foundation has spent hundreds of millions funding projects they claim will reconciling science and religion. Many of these projects are great, others are just creationism with a thin veneer. They funded, for example, the Discovery Institute, and much of the work currently done by the "Third Way of Evolution" (see below).

The Third Way of Evolution (2010s–present): A loose movement of scientists claiming to be dissatisfied with both modern evolutionary theory and creationism. Some "Third Way" advocates, while posing as scientific reformers, have resorted to the same petty tactics as creationists. This includes quote mining, misrepresenting evolutionary theory, cherry-picking data, and funneling papers through journals they control to avoid real peer review. This is all done to fabricate a crisis in evolutionary biology that doesn’t actually exist.
