The Journey to the Basecamp: NJP & sachen
​Our adventure began with a long overnight ride on the Darjeeling Mail to New Jalpaiguri (NJP). As part of the package organized by Chuchura Padatik, we took an 8-hour car ride through winding roads and stunning Sikkim scenery to reach Yuksom, the historic basecamp for the Goechala Trek.
​📍 About Yuksom: A Place of Historical & Spiritual Significance
​Yuksom (meaning "meeting place of the three learned monks") is a village in West Sikkim at an altitude of approximately 1,780 meters (5,840 feet). It holds immense historical importance as the first capital of the Kingdom of Sikkim, established in 1642 AD. It is the official starting point for the Goechala Trek and the gateway to the UNESCO World Heritage Site, Khangchendzonga National Park.
​⛰️ Day 1 Trek: Yuksom to Sachen
​After reaching Yuksom and meeting the excellent team from Chuchura Padatik, we completed the mandatory formalities at the Yuksom Check Post, showing our permits and beginning the trek!
​Trek Details: The first day's trek from Yuksom to Sachen is about 8 km and typically takes 4-6 hours.
​The Trail: The route is a moderate trek, gently ascending through dense, lush subtropical forests of pine, oak, and rhododendron. We crossed several wooden suspension bridges over beautiful rivers like the Pha Khola.
​⛺️ Sachen: Our First Campsite & Last Signal!
​Sachen (approx. 2,180 meters or 7,200 feet) is a peaceful forest clearing and our first campsite.
​Crucial Trekker Tip: Sachen is the last place on the trail where you might find a mobile network signal! 📵 Once we leave here, we’ll be completely off the grid for the rest of the trek, truly immersing ourselves in nature.
