Midjet - The BD-5j derivative. Project summary from initial sketches to subscale demonstrator

The Midjet is the result of a student project in the MSc Aeronautical Engineering at Linköping University, Sweden. It's a singe seat jet aircraft inspired by the legendary BD-5J. The task was to design a "successor" using modern technology and equipment. This course is taking place in the end of the student's education and allows the student to apply his/hers gained theoretical knowledge into a practical project. The video illustrates how the students starts off with primitive conceptual sketches and how they, by combining ideas, skill sets etc., gradually develop a stunning looking aircraft. The work included all aspects of aircraft design such as initial sizing, aerodynamic analysis, flight mechanics, structure and mechanical design, propulsion etc. A remote controlled 36% scale prototype was manufactured and this proved the design to have very clean and forgiving handling qualities. Over all it’s a very successful aircraft design, named Midjet for obvious reason (it's a midget jet).

The project was completed in 5 month.
