A snowy trip to the reputedly haunted ruins of St Mary's Church in Tivetshall. Part of the structure pre-dates 1086 and along with neighbouring St Margaret’s was one of two village churches to be recorded in the Domesday Book. In 1702 it was recorded that the St Mary’s Church had fallen into great decay and was in danger of falling to the ground. The maintenance of two village churches in the Tivetshalls was proving too costly. By the 1800s St Mary’s had deteriorated further with nature beginning to sprout through the stone flooring. Any remaining congregation moved to Tivetshall St Margaret by the 19th century. In 1947 St Mary’s tower collapsed into the nave when the vibration from a low-flying aircraft climbed to clear the woods to the rear of the church. This was recorded in eye-witness accounts from Mr George Humphries and Mr Jack Self, both of Rectory Road Tivetshall. The War Damage Commission refused to make any payment for damage arising from this event. The church ruins are rumoured to be haunted with up to five spirits believed to make their presence known here. One such spirit is said to be of a pedestrian who was killed in a car accident here in the 1950s. A car knocked over a man when turning a sharp corner by the church in a fatal collision. The ghost of a man in an old fashioned suit and a trilby hat has since been witnessed here. It is believed this is the spirit of the pedestrian who lost his life in the incident. Another spirit reputedly witnessed here is said to be an ex-priest who is seen as a guardian of the church.
