When gold was discovered just south of the new boomtown of Tonopah, Nevada in 1902 a rush for riches began. This would be the new San Francisco, the new El Dorado, the next big treasure trove of riches! It was the new gold rush. And it was the last. From all over the world gold seekers came to the central Nevada desert to get rich. They bought burros, mules, wagons and all the mining supplies they needed to go out into the hills and get rich. There truly was "gold in them thar hills"! Big companies and investors came in from the east to get in on the wealth. Promoters like George Graham Rice and others sold stock in worthless mines. People tried to eke out a living. There were prospectors, promoters, miners, bakers, chefs, cleaners, pimps, prostitutes and all manner of people who went into business to capitalize on the new rush. Buildings were constructed with the idea they would last forever but the boom was short lived and within a decade the town was nearly abandoned. This was America's last great gold rush and by 1913 it was over. But the town remains to this day and the ghosts of the gold rush can still be seen. Tourists enjoy the buildings being restored by enthusiasts and those who wish to see the town survive as a living ghost town. This is Goldfield!
