DAVID DE ROTHCHILD WANTS TO DELIVER A MESSAGE IN A BOTTLE...
Rothchild asks worker :"How's it going?"
THE BRITISH ENVIRONMENTALIST IS BUILDING A BOAT TO SAIL FROM SAN FRANCISCO TO AUSTRALIA. DUBBED THE "PLASTIKI," IT'S MADE ALMOST ENTIRELY FROM THESE...
(moving pile of plastic bottles nats)
David de Rothschild, Founder - Adventure Ecology, says: "What we're doing is getting our buoyancy from 12-and-a-half thousand two liter bottles that are acting as individual buoyancy chambers. When I first said that to my naval architect and some of the concept architects they looked at me like a was totally nuts."
(construction nats)
THE CONSTRUCTION HAS BEEN ONGOING FOR MONTHS. WHILE THE BOAT WILL FLOAT THANKS TO THE BOTTLES, THE FRAME IS MADE ENTIRELY OF RECYCLABLE MATERIALS.
(planning discussion - "We'll put the engine in there.")
THE AIM IS TO HIGHLIGHT THE PERILS OF PLASTIC AND PROMOTE RECYCLING. ONE OF THE CHALLENGES IN THE DESIGN WAS FINDING SOMETHING ENVIRONMENTALLY FRIENDLY TO HOLD THE WHOLE THING TOGETHER. THE SOLUTION? A WATERPROOF GLUE MADE FROM NUTS AND SUGAR.
David de Rothschild, Founder - Adventure Ecology, says: "It's funny. My mum, she rings me and says if it wasn't bad enough you've got a boat made out of plastic bottles, you're using cashew nuts and sugar to hold the whole thing together?!?"
A FULL CREW WILL BE ON BOARD TO MAKE THE ONE HUNDRED DAY, 11 THOUSAND-MILE VOYAGE.
Rothschild gives tour of boat house and says: "They'll be two more beds running here so they'll be able to have six people inside at any one time."
THE SKIPPER SAYS SAILING THE PLASTIKI WILL PRESENT SOME CHALLENGES.
Jo Royle, Plastiki Skipper, says: "The fact that we've got the plastic bottles on the outside against the water, that goes against any boat building laws that have ever been created. In fact, normally we're working hard to make the hull as smooth as possible."
David de Rothschild, Founder - Adventure Ecology, says: "It's an untested material in an uncontrollable environment, what does that equal? There's lots of question makes and I think if we knew everything that was going to happen precisely, it wouldn't be an adventure."
Haven Daley, Associated Press, says: "The crew of the Plastiki plans on setting sail for Australia in November.
