Tiberius Gracchus, Gracchus the Elder, Tribune of the Plebes, and one of the first liberal politicians of Rome, stands in rank with the rest of our ancient Roman heroes. Trained by Scipio Africanus, equipped with confidence in the Punic Wars, and taught in the art of speech, politics and law, Tiberius Gracchus was poised against the conservative walls of Roman government. Throughout the tumultuous history of Roman senate, the events of the Gracchi Land Reform (while uninteresting in name only) are one of the most controversial series of laws in the history of the republic, and one that many claim led to the fall of the Roman Republic and the rise of the Roman Empire.
Today we'll look at a timeline of his life and the lesson of mercy we can learn from his example. It's a showdown in the Roman senate. Liberal vs Conservative. Who will win in this episode of Famous Men of Virtue.
