Prof. Peter Wilson (Oxford) delivered the Conflict, Reconstruction and Memory (CRAM) annual lecture virtually at Swansea University on 3 March 2021.
The lecture examined how states obtained additional, often essential, resources which they could not obtain from their own populations. Prof. Wilson outlined what these resources were and how they were obtained, and then charted the growth of the system from the 1530s, through its maturity around 1700, peak in the Revolutionary and Napoleonic era and accelerating dismantling between 1815-70 as states fully nationalised war-making.
Prof. Elwen Evans, Executive Dean of the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences at Swansea University introduced the lecture. Dr. Leighton James chaired the session.
Prof. Wilson's research is funded by the European Research Council.
