Spartan warriors were made, not born. At age 7, Spartan boys were taken from their mothers and thrown into the Agoge—the brutal state training system that turned children into the most feared soldiers in ancient history. This is how Sparta created the 300.

The Agoge wasn't education. It was systematic destruction and reconstruction of human beings. Boys slept on reeds they pulled from rivers with bare hands. They were given one cloak per year—no shoes, no blankets, no beds. They were starved on purpose and forced to steal food to survive. If caught, they were beaten. Not for stealing—for getting caught.

At age 12, everything got worse. Older warriors selected boys as their personal companions. The boys were flogged at altars until they collapsed—sometimes to death—while crowds watched and cheered. This was considered sacred.

Then came the Krypteia. The final test. Young Spartans were sent into the countryside at night with only a knife. Their mission: hunt and kill helot slaves. Not enemy soldiers. Unarmed farmers. This was how Sparta taught its boys to murder.

The 300 at Thermopylae were real. Their courage was real. But they were products of a system that took seven-year-olds from their mothers and didn't return them until age 30—if they survived at all.
