Argo Transacord - Caledonian Engines SIDE ONE
Some Ex-Caledonian Railway engines at Beattock, Blair Atholl, Killin, Ballinluig and Aviemore.
*Side One*
0:00 - At Beattock in July 1957. In the early morning, outside the sheds Ex-Caledonian 439 Class No. 55234, Westinghouse brake pump thumping heavily, prepares for the days work.
The safety valves of a class 5MT lift as the engine waits in the loop with a north-bound goods train while Ex-Caledonian 812 Class No. 57613, signaled out of the yard with another north-bound goods train, whistles to the banking engine. The banker's whistles are all but drowned by the hiss of steam from the 5MT. Ex- Caledonian 812 No. 57613 gets the train moving towards the 1/88 gradiant at the foot of Beattock Bank; the banker, a 2-6-4T No. 44214, takes a share of the load and comes past the rear of the train, diving under the road bridge to the north of the station just as the waiting 5MT gives a mournful whistle.
3:43 - Another Ex-Caledonian 812 Class No. 57568, whistles and starts slowly away from the yard, heading a permanent way train towards Beattock Station.
4:38 - Ex- Caledonian 439 Class No. 55260 shunts back in to the bay platform, the leaves Beattock with the daily goods train for Moffat.
6:24 - At Blair Atholl in August 1959, Ex-Caledonian 4-4-0 72 Class No. 54486 starts away from the North signal box, running light towards the station before returning to Perth.
