Did you know honeybees can be quite picky about their preferred nectar?
We love a bit of smashed avocado on toast but turns out the nectar from avocado flowers is not exactly a honeybee's first choice of cuisine. That's a problem for pollination because no pollination means no avocados!
Avocado is the highest value perennial horticultural crop in the South West so ensuring healthy levels of pollination and production was important for the industry.
In partnership with Curtin University we tackled this one with science - specifically the cutting edge science of e-DNA.
You see, forensic investigators use DNA evidence to track down criminals. We've been using it to track the behaviour of honeybees and other pollinators.
Through innovative molecular technology we discovered what types of pollinators were visiting the trees at our test site avocado farm near Manjimup and then planted more of the types of plants and flowers nearby that we knew they really liked! Pretty sneaky but it worked!
