In September 1991, a gang of four suspects from West Covina later identified as John Irving Lewis, Lewis' girlfriend Eileen Huber, Lewis' step-sister Robbin Machuca, and Machuca's boyfriend Vincent Hubbard was arrested in connection with a murder spree around the mall property. The gang was found to have been involved in five murders and three robberies spanning between July and August of 1991. The four were arrested at their apartment on August 30, 1991, pleading not guilty to the charges. Hubbard, Machuca, and Huber were all given life sentences on December 18, 1992. On March 4, 1993, the California Supreme Court granted Lewis the death penalty for his role of orchestrating the murders. Lewis is currently incarcerated in Death Row at San Quentin State Prison awaiting execution.

A convicted killer was sentenced to death and his sister and two friends each received life prison terms for a 1991 robbery and murder spree that terrorized a Los Angeles suburban area. Five people were kidnapped, two from shopping malls, and murdered after being robbed or forced to withdraw cash from their automatic teller machines in the San Gabriel Valley east of Los Angeles. Los Angeles County Superior Court Judge Clarence Strom well followed the recommendations made last month by a jury, sentencing John Lewis, 22, to death and Robin Machuca, 27, Vincent Hubbard, 27, and Eileen Huber, 21, to life in prison without parole. Lewis, who told police he committed the crimes "to get back at society," was convicted in December of all five murders Machuca and Huber each were convicted of three and Hubbard of two.

Machuca is Lewis' sister and Huber was his girlfriend at the time. The four were arrested Aug. 30, 1991, after a security camera at an automatic teller machine photographed them withdrawing money. The first murder occurred July 5, 1991, when Jose Avina, 22, of Nor-walk was shot after he tried to flee when his truck was bumped from behind on a street On Aug. 4, 1991, Augustine Ramirez, 53, of West Covina was shot as he and his wife left the restaurant they owned.

Willie Sams, 41 , of West Covina was shot in a trash bin Aug. 18, 1991, after being kidnapped while it an automatic teller machine. Elizabeth Nisbet, 49, of Diamond Bar was abducted Aug. 24 from the parking lot of the Puente Hills Mall and shot On Aug. 27, Shirley Denogean, 56, of Claremont was kidnapped from the same mall and shot near a freeway embankment.
