Discovering the Legend of Bhramari Devi at Bageshwar’s Iconic Temple

🚩 Welcome to another episode of my Kumaon travel series!

After exploring the Baijnath Group of Temples, my friends and I continued our journey to the Kot Bhramari Temple, a revered hilltop shrine in Bageshwar district, Uttarakhand. This temple, dedicated to Goddess Bhramari Devi, is not only a place of deep spirituality but also holds an intriguing legend that makes it unique among Hindu temples.

🚗 Scenic Drive to the Temple
The journey from Baijnath to Kot Bhramari Temple was an adventure in itself. The winding roads, surrounded by lush greenery and distant Himalayan peaks, made for a mesmerizing drive. With every turn, the panoramic views of the Kumaon region became even more breathtaking.

🛕 Arriving at the Temple
Upon reaching the temple entry gate, we climbed a few stairs to enter the compound. The sight of hundreds of bells tied throughout the premises reminded me of Chitai’s Golu Devta Temple, creating an enchanting and deeply spiritual ambiance.
The Unique Worship of Bhramari Devi

🙏 Prayers & Rituals
After removing my shoes and washing my hands, I entered the main temple to offer prayers. The sanctum houses idols of Goddess Bhramari Devi, Nanda Devi, and other deities, radiating a sense of divinity and peace.

🔍 The Mystery of ‘Back Worship’
One of the most fascinating aspects of Bhramari Devi Temple is its unusual worship practice. Here, devotees offer prayers to the back of the goddess, as it is believed that her direct front-facing form is too powerful to behold. Instead, visitors view her front reflection in a mirror, a ritual unlike any other in Uttarakhand.

💬 A Spiritual Encounter
During my visit, I had a lovely conversation with a newlywed couple, who had come to seek blessings. Such interactions always add a special touch to my travel experiences, making them more memorable.

🌿 Awe-Inspiring Natural Beauty
After performing a parikrama (circumambulation) of the temple, I took a moment to soak in the serene beauty of the surrounding hills. Every corner of this temple offered breathtaking views of nature, making it a perfect place for both devotion and tranquility.
