Doomsday Clock moves closer to midnight than ever

Watch the 2026 Doomsday Clock announcement after last year it moved closer to midnight than ever before.

The clock's new time of 89 seconds to midnight was announced in January 2025, moving one second closer than where it had remained for the previous two years - indicating the scientists behind it believe we are edging closer towards a global catastrophe.

The Doomsday Clock was created in 1947 by experts at the Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists who had worked on the Manhattan Project to design and build the first atomic bomb.

They set up the clock to provide a simple way of showing the danger to the Earth and humanity posed by nuclear armageddon.

The bulletin is an independent non-profit organisation run by some of the world's most prominent scientists.
