Ever wondered what it's like to be in a coding bootcamp? Here I talk about my experience at a 6-month, part-time coding bootcamp. Please feel free to message me on LinkedIn if you want to talk more about coding, my experience, or the logistics of this program: / falon-darville
I am attending a Trilogy Education bootcamp at the UC Davis Extension in Sacramento, CA. It ends in July, so these are my thoughts so far. Overall, it's a decent program for those who need the motivation and structure to learn code.
The cohort is made up of 30 students with two T.A.s and one instructor. We communicate using Slack, have homework assignments weekly and biweekly, and complete three projects total in teams.
UPDATE 2018: I graduated from the bootcamp and found a job without the help of career services.
UPDATE JUNE 2019: I have been working at my new job as a Technical Writer for over 6 months now. At this job, I have built a React Native app, worked with the proprietary API, developed smaller JS and Python apps, and learned how to work with Ruby on Rails and haml. I've also learned a lot about the sorts of traps of documentation.
UPDATE DECEMBER 2020: I was recently promoted to Senior Technical Writer at a startup in the Los Angeles area. I work daily with Git and Markdown. Though I have written some code at this position, my primary focus is on building the documentation culture.
NOTE: I am not affiliated with this program in any way other than my attendance. For full disclosure, I was offered a TA position but the contract was not suitable for me and I turned it down. The contract included clauses that would make it so that all of my online content would belong to Trilogy Education.
