Here, Moran Wasser performs his own arrangement of this very lovely Chaconne on an 11-string guitar. The guitar was built by Dieter Mueller.
The Music
Bach’s Chaconne in D minor, BWV 1004 is a monumental work within the violin repertoire, often regarded as one of the greatest pieces ever written for solo violin. It is the final movement of his Partita No. 2 in D minor, composed between 1717 and 1720.
The Chaconne is a set of variations over a repeating bass line, a form that originated in the Baroque period. It consists of a series of variations that explore a wide range of emotions and technical challenges. The piece is divided into three main sections: the opening in D minor, a contrasting major section, and a return to the minor key.
The 11-String Guitar
The 11-string guitar is an extended-range classical guitar, often referred to as an alto guitar or Bolin guitar. It was developed by Swedish luthier Georg Bolin in the 1960s. This guitar typically features eleven strings, providing a broader range of notes compared to the standard six-string guitar.
The additional strings allow for more complex and richer harmonies, making it popular among classical and experimental guitarists. Notable musicians like Per-Olof Johnson and Göran Söllscher have helped popularize this instrument.
