Here's a fun little project akin to an audio Magic 8 - Ball using an Arduino Pro-mini, W25Q64 Flash, and a Chinese PT-8211, probably the cheapest ever 16 bit stereo Codec, and 70 or so response messages.
The stream format is not i2s or the like, and seems more similar to SPI Mode 0, and is described as the Japanese format, never heard of it. Go it working along with the flash chip on the same bus, at full speed SPI for the Atmega328p on 16MHz, where there's a will there's a way ;)
Next time I will experiment with a dedicated port or bit-bang the thing, this was hardly a fair test of it's capability.
Happily the sample rate is nice up at 16Ks/s and could be just as easily stereo 16 bits as loads 8 bytes from the flash at once, twice what it needs. I even managed to stuff a level control in (*/128 by "shift right" 7) to soft fade in the sample starts.
