Mpika is one of the eight districts in Muchinga Province of the Republic of Zambia. It was founded in 1901 and was administered through a Sub-Centre that was set up at Makanga’s village on the banks of the Lwitikila river. However, owing to security challenges the Sub-Centre was then moved to the location now known as Mpika Boma chosen for its conveniency.
Mpika is in Muchinga Province and is found at the junction of the M1 and Great North Road (T2) between the Muchinga Escarpment and surrounding miombo plains. It is a convenient overnight stop for those heading to the towns of Kasama, Mbala and Mpulunga at Lake Tanganika or the Tanzanian border. It is also a stop on the Tazara railway between Kapiri Mposhi and Dar es Salaam. In 1970, the Zambian College for Agriculture was established at Mpika.
Key sites in the area include the Mpika Dam, Kapishya Hotsprings, Nachikufu rock paintings and Shiwa Ng’andu, an English manor house.
