PBL Lab: Pacific2025 global student team - "iLearn" Project Evolution Story

Pacific2025 global student project team inspires us with their creative solution called "iLearn". They share the story of their globally distributed, multi-disciplinary, project-based learning experience as they stayed connected and virtually designed and built a sustainable university building, addressed local hazards such as earthquakes. They leveraged emerging technologies including VR, AI, parametric modeling, and optimization during the "32nd AEC Global Teamwork" course they participated online - January-May 2025. Their global team was composed of students from 6 universities and distributed over three time zones.
The PBL Lab, in the Civil and Environmental Engineering Department at Stanford University, is the home of this unique "Architecture Engineering Construction - AEC Global teamwork" course Dr. Renate Fruchter teaches since 1993 at Stanford University in collaboration with university and industry partners worldwide. It brings together globally distributed students, faculty and industry mentors from architecture, structural engineering, building systems MEP engineering, construction management, and life cycle financial management. The aim is to prepare the next generation leaders for new ways of working to make the world a better place.
All AEC project teams were invited to address this year’s AEC Global Teamwork class theme “Generative Minds for a Better World: AI-Enhanced Collaboration and High-Performance Buildings”
and three specific challenges:
• 19th Sustainability Challenge: TIME – urgency to define sustainability impacts in a temporal dimension.
• 16th IPD Challenge: T-Mind - Cultivating a Team Mindset in Support of Productivity in the Age of Construction 4.0.
• 7th Technology Challenge: SIS Chain - Sustainable Intelligent Supply Chain
