After the fall of Yugoslavia in 1991, Kosovo became the scene of one of Europe’s last major wars, a brutal conflict between Serbs and Albanians that left deep marks on both sides.
In this video, I rent a car in Pristina, the country’s lively capital, and drive north to Mitrovica, a city still split between Kosovo Albanians and Kosovo Serbs. From there, I head into the mountains to explore abandoned villages and visit the memorial home of Adem Jashari, one of the key figures of Kosovo’s fight for independence.
Travelling through the region, I was struck by how much the past still lingers in everyday life, even decades after the war ended.
