Program Note: Conceived as a "collection of sonorities," this prelude gathers distinct musical textures and harmonic colors from different historical epochs into a cohesive whole. The texture begins transparently with imitative polyphony, highlighted by the alto presenting an augmented version of the soprano's material. Layer by layer, the density increases as new voices introduce contrasting approaches, including harmonized lines moving in direct motion with uniform intervals. The harmonic language itself reflects this historical collage. The foundational resonance of medieval intervals (fourths and fifths) seamlessly blends with the expressive potential of triads as explored in the early modernist period. At the heart of this diverse harmonic exploration is a central focus on the pitch C. The modal variations inflect both the melodic/harmonic pitches, as well as the rhythmic durations, ensuring a constant evolution within the established center. The result is a prelude that is both a journey through time and a celebration of the diverse sounds that constitute our musical heritage.
