After traveling through three states, we’ve arrived in the breathtaking Sonoran Desert to spend the winter! This is the first episode in our 15-part series exploring Arizona’s hidden gems, history, and natural beauty.

🛻 Off-Road License & Valley of the Sun Stop
We originally planned to camp east of Tucson but switched gears to explore the Valley of the Sun — a tourism nickname from the 1930s. Along the way, we stopped in Mesa to take the off-road license test for Arizona’s public lands, prepping for future adventures.

👻 Goldfield Ghost Town Adventure
Goldfield isn’t your typical ghost town! It’s a lively, free-entry historic attraction filled with hourly Old West gun shows, unique shops, and rich mining history. Learn about its gold rush boom, bust, and revival as a tourist hotspot.

💎 Mammoth Mine Gift & Rock Shop
Step into a time capsule of rocks, minerals, and dinosaur bones. Ron Feldman, the knowledgeable owner and author, shares fascinating stories — including about the legendary Lost Dutchman Gold Mine nearby.

🏞️ Lost Dutchman Museum & Superstition Mountains Lore
Explore 15 acres of artifacts and legends at this museum dedicated to the mysterious Superstition Mountains. Hear tales of Native American stories, disappearances, and John Waltz — the German immigrant linked to hidden caches of gold and local mining history.

🍻 Local Flavor at the Hitching Post Bar
Experience local nightlife cowboy-style! We visited the Hitching Post Bar with live music and a great atmosphere—perfect for soaking up the western vibe, even if you don’t ride a horse there.

🚤 Scenic Dolly Steamboat Cruise on Canyon Lake
Instead of kayaking in the chilly weather, we enjoyed a relaxing, narrated steamboat cruise on Canyon Lake. The views and wildlife sightings made it a highlight and highly recommended activity.

🏜️ Exploring Tortilla Flats on the Apache Trail
This tiny town started as a 1904 stagecoach stop and is now packed with quirky shops and history. The Apache Trail is also known as one of America’s top 10 motorcycle rides — a must-see for adventurers!
