Mansa Musa: The Richest Man in History Who Crashed an Economy

In 1324, Mansa Musa left Mali with so much gold that he accidentally crashed Cairo's economy for a decade. This is the story of the richest man in history and what he chose to do with unimaginable wealth.

Mansa Musa ruled the Mali Empire at its height, controlling half the world's gold supply. When he decided to make the pilgrimage to Mecca, he brought 60,000 people, 12,000 enslaved people carrying gold bars, and spent so lavishly in Cairo that he caused hyperinflation.

But this isn't just a story about wealth. It's about the choices we make with power:

THE CAIRO CRISIS:
Musa's generosity flooded Cairo's markets with gold, devaluing the currency and destroying the economy. Merchants who accepted his gifts watched their life savings become worthless. When Musa realized what he'd done, he tried to fix it by borrowing gold at interest to remove it from circulation. The question haunts him: If doing the right thing causes suffering, is it still right?

THE TIMBUKTU TRANSFORMATION:
Musa returned home determined to build a different legacy. He transformed Timbuktu into one of the world's great intellectual centers, with the Sankore mosque, libraries filled with manuscripts, and scholars studying astronomy, mathematics, and medicine while Europe struggled through the Dark Ages.

But building this required cultural negotiation. Traditional griots feared being replaced by written texts. Religious leaders worried about Islamic architecture replacing sacred sites. Musa had to prove Mali could honor its past while building its future.

By his passing around 1337, Timbuktu rivaled Cairo as a center of learning. While European scholars debated how many angels could dance on a pin, Timbuktu's astronomers tracked planetary movements with precision.
