The Calatrava is the classic watch that has defined Patek Philippe’s history for over 90 years. In this video, John Reardon explains the history of the Calatrava collection and presents nine examples of the iconic, time-only round watch currently available from Collectability.
The name 'Calatrava' was not used to describe a round Patek Philippe watch until the 1980s. Any time-only, round watch prior to this time is retroactively classified as a Calatrava. Historically, the first ‘Calatrava’ was the ref. 96 introduced in 1932, its design based on the Bauhaus principle that form follows function. The classic form of the ref. 96 can still be traced through most of the countless Calatrava versions produced over the past 92 years. Here we will see a wide variety of Calatrava styles dating from the early 1950s to 2019, each explained in detail by John.
