In 1984, Nike's basketball shoe division faced closure due to poor sales. Marketing VP Rob Strasser and CEO Phil Knight assigned talent scout Sonny Vaccaro to find a new spokesperson. Despite initial reservations about the cost and Jordan's preference for other brands, Vaccaro believed Michael Jordan was a once-in-a-generation talent that could elevate Nike's brand. After convincing Jordan's mother and securing a meeting, Vaccaro and Strasser prepared a pitch, named the prototype "Air Jordan," and allocated the budget to hire Jordan. When Adidas made a matching offer, Jordan agreed to sign with Nike on the condition of earning a percentage from each Air Jordan sold. The Air Jordan line exceeded expectations, earning $162 million in one year, securing Nike's success.
